Not the best photo, hard to see details or judge size... and knowing the eta of the crash would help in knowing if it had original or modern instruments and avionics.
But a wild guess because of the wire: an electric motor ...the DGAs had electric flaps and rudder trim, or a trailing wire antenna. The Navy Howards were often instrument trainers, so they would have been better equipped than most general aviation types.
