Registry Entry: T-28 Trojan/51-3742

I sorta like this civilian scheme. It's like a hot rod warbird :)

That means the aircraft is a French T-28S Fennec. They had supercharged Wright R-1820-96 engines and the rear air scoop is an air cooler intake.

There are several of these Fennec's in the US. If you look at the planes currently or previously regd. in the N141** bracket you will find those that were sold surplus by France to Waco Pacific Inc of Van Nuys CA. Some were then sold on to air forces around the world through Winter-Wolff & Co of New York (which might have bought the entire batch from Waco Pacific), with some returning to the US in the late 70s and early 80s.

N14141 seems to have been one that didn't venture abroad again after returning to the US in 1968. There is a photo of it in Steve Ginter's book "The T-28 in Navy, Air Force, & foreign service". It shows 141 on a snowy ramp in Jan, 1973, plain aluminium with the N# in black on the fuselage. It got its US CofA in June 1975.

As for owner Ray Karrels, he was a Port Washington, WI airport operator who died of a heart attack in 1982. He also owned another T-28 and an A-26 (at least) in the 1970s. His widow Caroline then became regd. owner of N14141. As to its fate, who knows...

Dang, you appear to be the go-to guy for a quick serial number search! So, umm, errr.... any chance you might look up another T-28A? We’re an owner group in Texas that recently bought and returned to flight Fennec No1, N632NA, sn 51-7632. We received a brief rundown from Maxwell, but it seems kinda sparse... then again, maybe this particular T-28 just has a sparse USAF history. Now if I only could speak French I might be able to track it’s history in Algeria with the French Air Force...

Thanks!

John,

Apologies but I don't have that roll of microfilm: mine are usually related to F-86s and though I usually do have the info, this time I don't.

Maxwell do a good job of interpreting record cards but often won't translate parts which are not obvious: one example is 'SCAOC' in the record above: as you go through cards you build up a knowledge of what organizations did what and where. This usually gives you a good chance of deciphering these.

I'd suggest requesting a copy of the actual cards from Maxwell rather than a transcript.

Hope this helps a bit.
