I'm currently looking into potential software for the future upgrading of the site so I wanted to get some feedback from the community. Right now there are two main options for the forums.
The first is to upgrade the current software to the latest version which will have a bit more functionality but essentially the same software you're familiar with.

The second option is a more social media like software, essentially a Facebook dedicated solely to the WIX community.

Thoughts?

Is there an existing forum for each option we could check out?

I suppose WIX was social media before social media was even a term!

I like the fact this is a dedicated site, divorced from all the usual Facebook problems. Social media is a bit too inclusive at times and it can distract from the point of this site. I prefer the more dedicated crowd we have here.

Also, Facebook is not good for archiving or searching past posts. It is too much media for the moment.

I have found that to be a huge drawback.

Hi Scott,
I believe there already is a WIX Facebook page. Had I felt the need to allow Facebook to (ab)use my personal information, I would have joined them a long time ago and possibly consulted the WIX Facebook page instead of this forum. As it is, I'm ever so happy that this forum has not moved over and continues to allow us to communicate in a clear, well-structured, archivable way. So as far as I'm concerned: (just) an update please!
Thanks for all your hard work!
Roger

I agree with all of this. The only thing I don't like about the forums is that posting photos can be a bit of a hassle. I'm not sure if there's an easier solution with the software available, but that's really the only small drawback I see with the forums at the moment. I think having the forums are also much easier to moderate and, as bdk pointed out, generally keeps a lot of the Facebook dysfunction out (though we do have those occasional moments here).

I visit the WIX Facebook group regularly for photos, but I find the quality of discussion here to much more topical and informative. My concern would be a Facebook-type layout would dilute the quality of posts. Facebook is also much less organized than the forums are. These are much user-friendly if you're looking for a particular topic.

Well so far it seems pretty clear about the direction we should go. The photo issue is a big one and I'm trying to figure out a solution and hopefully the upgrade will be part of it. It will require a server change which is a new adventure as well. I'll have to crunch the numbers and see if its even feasible to support inline images on a large scale. I'll look into it further but at least I have confidence that I will be moving in the direction the community will support. Thanks all.

Well, if you consider there must be still a few of us left that started out on the old WWW posting forum then, yes is the answer to that.

Strewth, that makes me feel old just thinking about that

The only complaint I have about the current setup is the limitations on the Search function; trying to search a serial number has never worked.

That said, if you're casting around for a template, check out the H.A.M.B. (Hokey Ass Message Board) traditional hot rod/custom forum:
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/for ... e-board.5/
One nice thing is you can either upload photos directly (yay!) or use the usual providers like Fotki or Flickr.

I don't Facebook.
I like this site. A lot of great info, despite the odd troll.
I submitted a vote and to this point it reads 100% for Vs 0% against.
That says a lot.

Thanks Scott. You can never be given enough credit.

Hello Scott,

I was on FB for a few years. Then resigned and cancelled my account (which was a huge undertaking in itself as they do everything they can to keep you ensnared). I got away from them because everything became intrusive and I never felt comfortable with 'Big Brother' always in the background.

So please don't even entertain a Facebook type solution.

Retaining the current site with a few tweaks would be perfect.

That's my 10c worth.

Keep up the good work.

Barry

Been wondering how long it'd take before the world begins to realize FB sucks. :hide:
