Warbird Information Exchange

Driving around locally this past weekend, I spotted this out of the corner of my eye.

I reversed to make sure I wasn't seeing things and sure enough, it's a F-4 cockpit on a trailer.

Looks to have been sitting there for atleast 5 years.

Movie Prop?

Sweet! If it were me I'd haul it to the work parking lot and be out there on all of my lunches 'flying'

It reminds me of the Phantom cockpit trailers someone (or more than one person) took to air shows for photos. One side was painted as a Blue Angel, the other as a Thunderbird.

IIRC, I think someone was doing that with an A-7 cockpit as well.

It would be helpful to know the city the photo was taken in to help figure out what it was doing....I.e. in LA there's a greater chance of it being a film prop than Cheyenne, Wyoming.

A location to the F-4 cockpit would be helpful!

David Garbe of NY a friend of mine has a F-4 cockpit in sea camo all restored he takes to shows and events and you can sit in the cockpit and have your photo taken.

My other friend, Ben Gimbert from Virginia has a F-4 cockpit in the markings of the USAF Thunderbirds. I don't think he has taken it to any shows in awhile. Ben also owns a complete F-86F.

Dewey Larson has a A-7 cockpit on trailer and was restored years ago and the fellow totes it around shows in the Midwest. his website:

Potential movie prop, at least - still has much of its Spraylat all over the canopy. Looks like it went straight from Davis-Monthan to the trailer.

Well, I am jealous of someone in Maryland - how cool would that be to have a Phantom cockpit!

It seems cockpits on trailers are big in the UK but I don't here much if anything about it being done in the U.S. Is it a primarily UK thing or do we just not hear about American efforts in this area?

It is a UK thing and in lesser part a European thing. I am always amazed there are so few cockpits in the US. So many warbird enthusiasts who cannot afford a complete aeroplane. A cockpit is perfect! i would think warbird cockpits would be booming in the US. It must be the easiest country to acquire a surplus airframe. So many are just scrapped!
