Is there a name for the unusual 747-like cockpit-and-aft structure atop a B-17's fuselage? I vaguely remember hearing it called "the doghouse," but I could well be wrong.

That`s the "Turtle deck". Honestly no idea if it is one word or two. :D

Generally, an area aft of the cockpit is called a turtledeck.
I've never come across a nickname for it unique to B-17 and used by crews and maintainers.

I would be interested to know if there was one.

Would it be the flight deck of which the cockpit is part of? Seem to recall that on Hercs. Been a few years so I could be all wet.

Well, it is generally applied to any aircraft structure that looks like a "Dog House", such as the rear upper cockpit section on a Hurricane, that is also known as the "Dog House"

Had some CG helos with a doghouse. That was usually the aft MGB or eng cowling depending on airframe.

I worked on a 17 for 10 years and never heard it called anything but the fuselage.

All B-17 tech manuals refer to it as the cockpit enclosure.

Also heard it referred to as the "kennel" on the Hurricane. On the Hurricane the cockpit area is an almost all wood structure.

Having shared a hangar with a Hurricane I can tell you the belly scoop is metal.
