At the risk of being pedantic....
Can we start using the hyphen again?
Too many here are getting sloppy...we (of all people being a U.S. based forum) should be using the correct U.S. designations.

Its P-47...C-47, etc.

It's not like I'm asking you to switch from Me-109 to Bf-109...or MIG to MiG. :)

And while we're at it, let's put those hyphens in the right place:

P51-D = WRONG

P-51D = CORRECT

F-4U1 = WRONG

F4U-1 = CORRECT

et cetera...

Of hypens, pet peeves and some such and sundry.

Hangar, NOT Hanger.

Serviceable, NOT Servicable

Example, NOT Sample.

Couldn't care less, NOT Could care less.

Tucson, NOT Tuscon.

Phoenix, NOT Pheonix.

Albuquerque, NOT Alburqueque

The list goes on and on... I don't know why in Europe, they tend to replace at times, the hyphen in American airplane designators, with a period.

Saludos,

Tulio

One other thing, bigger than hypens.....

In each post at least ONCE spell out the Museum or Base name and the Airport (not designation)...

IE.... Airplane is at MRGM at AFLAC...... May make sense to you, makes little sense to me and years from now nobody knows what it means.

Thanks

Mark H

Surprised you didn't mention:
Colombia, NOT Columbia (unless you're talking about who built the XJL-1 and a bunch of Ducks)

Conversely, I have been told that using hyphens in German designations is wrong. It should be written Bf 109, He 111, Fw 190 etc. Note also that the second letter is lower case. I tend to write them with a hyphen just because it's so commonly accepted.

Another one few people realize: when talking about WWII Japanese AAF aircraft, designations like Ki-43 should not be pronounced "Kay-Eye Forty-Three," but rather "Key Forty-Three," because the "KI" is actually the last syllable of the word (I think) "Hikoki." I'm also guilty of regularly violating this one, because most people don't understand when you pronounce it correctly.

Building on what Steve said just above, I understand that many Russian aircraft names are treated similarly. For example, a Sukhoi model 24 would be written as "Su 24" and pronounced "Soo twenty-four", not written as "SU-24" or pronounced "S U twenty-four". A Mikoyan-Gurevich model 29 would be written "MiG 29" (no hyphen).

Experts on Russian aircraft... the above commentary is subject to your correction, of course! :D

What started out as a minor rant is actually becoming a fun and interesting thread! geek

+1! (to both)

I used to be a partner in an IT support firm where one of the other partners had immigrated to the US from Russia. He told me the exact same thing about the proper pronunciation of the Russian/Soviet military aircraft designations. If you think about it, that's exactly how we all pronounced "MiG" all along.

That being the case, it can get confusing if you start talking about a "Too-95" Bear for example...or was that "2-95"? Even so, I always liked the habit of calling the "Too-144" SST airliner "Concordeski" as well.

I'm also sure that by now most folks know or realize that Antonov, Mikoyan Gurevich, Sukhoi, Tupolev, etc. were not "manufacturers" of Soviet-era aircraft; they were simply "design bureaus" and the aircraft were actually built in "state" factories.

and perhaps we should be reminded that RADAR is an acronym (for RAdio Detection And Ranging).
