Wikimapia satellite view identifies a remote jungle strip at the northern tip of Vella LaVella as VMA-214 WW2 Airbase. The runway is still recognizable, along with what looks like a quonset hut and some small buildings. Google Earth calls this jungle field Geva Airstrip. I can almost picture Pappy in his birdcage coming up out of this jungle strip to smoke a few more Zekes. My apologies if this base has been discussed previously.

Did Pappy and the Sheep have a secret base on Vella LaVella?

Um.....No!
Geva was a postwar A/F ie 1990ish that's now abandoned.
Barakoma A/F was used by a number of squadrons inc VMF-214. It was abandonded
in mid 1944.

Yes, it was called "Vella La Cava" and exists somewhere along a remote South Pacific coast in the mind of Stephen J. Cannell. ;)
