Sorry folks for posting this over here in the Hangar and not in the modelers gallery/forum but I think many here would like to/should see this.

This fellow has created one spectacular piece of artwork and he's looking to display her in a new home. I've made him an offer as well as several good suggestions from others over on the Hyperscale modeling forum. http://www.clubhyper.com/forums/forum.htm (guess I can't post the exact location of the thread for some reason so scroll down to the second page and look for the thread title "anyone needs an aircraft carrier?") ... here's the content of his thread post.

"Hi there,

today I received some bad news. The little museum where my aircraft carrier model of the USS Sangamon is on display will be closed soon.

This means I have to bring back my model and store it at home. Fortunately I have the ability to do both but I surely would prefer that as much people as possible can have a look at this model.

So if someone here has got an idea where this model could be displayed, please let me know. Just a few facts about the model, it depicts the USS Sangamon CVE-26, as she appeared in March 1945. The model is entirely scratch build in the scale of 1:72, the model is almost 9 ft. long, 2ft wide and 2 1/2 high, weights about 80 pounds and can be split for transport. I have two large dust proof aluminum boxes for long distance transport. It is a conplete scratch build, there are 28 aircraft on the ship and 426 figures

Of course I would prefer a place where it can be displayed and be accessible to the public. If there are any question concerning this task, please let me know."

Take a look at his incredible work. I hope he considers my/others offers. Pensacola would be a fantastic location to display her wouldn't you think? Of course any of the carrier museums would be perfect as well. I really hope this gentleman takes one of the offers as this model really must be seen by as many people as possible IMHO. Bravo to the creator for such a wonderful creation. (mods can move this thread to it's proper location if you see fit)

His research is right on the money.
TBM-3E Avenger, from Torpedo Squadron Thirty-Three (VT-33), in flight over CVE-26 (USS Sangamon).

Glad you brought this to attention Mark, that is quite a display!!

The National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas may be a great choice to consider as well. Being further inland, it may have a better chance of lasting. It's possible they may be more cooperative, or have more of an appreciation for it.

No better place than NNAM in Pensacola. It the same scale as the already displayed
USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6). Almost a million visitors a year! maybe this is the year as the Blues are back in the air!

Lemme know,
Owen

That is, without a doubt the best model I have ever seen.

René Hieronymus, the master model builder and owner is considering his options at the moment, which is quite understandable seeing as there is so much interest from many interested parties. Rene and the model are located in Austria so there are obvious logistics involved as well. (but nothing that can't be handled) and I have offered my assistance in anything Rene needs. I wish him the very best in his decision making.

As you can see from several more of Rene's photos that this is simply craftsmanship at it's finest and certainly a unique and valuable tribute to all the US Navy pilots and seamen who served on these type of carriers during WWII. A must-see for veterans and general folks indeed.

An update this morning. René has expressed an interest in presenting his model to the NMNA Pensacola. An absolutely fine choice indeed. I will do all I can to help René see this through. I will be contacting the directors of the museum ASAP. Anyone wishing to assist in contacts with the museum please feel free to PM me anytime.

Thx

M

Of course there's always the reality of 'logistics' and required US Navy Model construction specifications. :(

If only things were simple huh? We will just have to see what happens, but I can tell you this, wouldn't the model of the USS Sangamon look nice next to the USS Enterprise model at Pensacola? I think so ...

Mark, probably the most constructive thing we can do right now is start trying to raise money to get the model across the Atlantic. No better place for it, but NNAM is not bucks up at the moment. I'd kick in........Who's next???????????

Greetings Owen, shipping is not the issue as I'll take care of that. I'll even help get Rene over here as well if Pensacola says "yes" ... The required "US Navy Model construction specifications" could be an issue. We'll see what develops in that particular area. Hopefully it shouldn't be an issue, .... but as we know! ....

As a 15-year (!!!) member of Hyperscale, I've watched Rene's work develop over the years to the point that he must be considered one of the greatest craftsmen I've ever seen... his ideas are audacious, and he is utterly fearless in his efforts to realize his ideas, as you all must surely recognize from his beautiful Sangamon posted above.

But as awesome as it is, this is not Rene's masterwork.

In October, he completed what I regard as the single most ambitious diorama I have ever had the pleasure to see... he built the USS Missouri in 1/72 scale, entirely from scratch, in order to recreate the famous Kamikaze attack of an A6M5 Zero against her starboard hull on 11 April 1945, off the coast of Okinawa.

Words fail to describe how utterly amazing this is... I'll post a couple photos and a link to the thread describing the finished work, "Some Fought To Live - Some Fought To Die".

The original photo:

And Rene's scale rendition:

I would encourage EVERYONE viewing this thread to go see the other photos posted of this masterpiece, and remember this as you are looking at them: the ship is completely scratchbuilt.

Have you thought about contacting the Escort Carrier Sailors & Airmen Association? The ECSSA maintains dedicated exhibits of artifacts related to ships and crews like that of Sangamon and her many sisters at major museums throughout the US.

http://www.escortcarriers.com/exhibit-and-memorials

I don't personally know anyone involved with the group, but judging from the website (and the displays I've seen), I'm willing to bet they'd be thrilled to learn of Renee's model and help find it a new home. Clearly they have well established connections at all of the places you most want to contact .. and the motivation to see your worthy project succeed.
