Someone a while back mentioned composites. I remember in an issue of Classic Wings Downunder there was a brief article on a 1/1 composite P-51 powered by a turboprop. Anyone remember this, know what happened etc? From memory it had a three-blade prop with a pointed spinner, and may have been white. I don't remember much else.

Cameron P-51G. The prototype was for sale on eBay awhile back (don't know if it sold or what became of it). The web site is still up/operating: http://www.cameronaircraft.com/Team%2051.html

Tjis seems like as good a place to ask as anywhere; I was at a D-Day re-enactment at New Orleans in 1992 on Lake Ponchartrain, and there was a replica Stuka. I recall it was a large scale model of one. Looked decent from what i could see, but I was lying prone on a beach, soaked from going into the lake to my shoulders, covered in beach sand while being shot at by German re-enactors, so clearly I didn't get that great a look.
Does anyone have a clue which one that was? I have searched online and found a few possible planes it could have been. I've always wanted to know which plane that was as I never heard about it again after that.

My guess would be the 70% scale reproduction shown below which has been flying regularly since the late '70s. IMHO, this is one of the better looking scaled replicas I've seen and the fact that is has been flying for nearly 40 years must certainly be a credit to its designer/builder! I am not aware of any other Stuka replicas ever having been operated in this country but that does not necessarily mean much.

I think there have been at least two Stuka replicas. I believe I saw this one at Oshkosh a decade or more ago. One Stuka replica used some PT-19 parts if I remember correctly.

My $0.02 on why they aren't done more? It is a an ENORMOUS amount of effort. Creating something from partial drawings is much more difficult than duplicating a bent or corroded actual part. The idea that any of this would be "low hanging fruit" is pretty optimistic, doing a Vindicator or Devestator would probably be 30,000-50,000 man hours.

It's about demand: the Spitfires, P-51s, 109s etc are there because people finance them and they are popular at airshows. OK the basic tooling is available, but each one is pretty much a one-off, so it just takes someone with enough cash to stump up the funds and then anything is possible.

Chad, if Facebook is ok with you, here is a link to one of Harald´s albums of his D-EJHA 109 V7 replica: https://www.facebook.com/harald.wiegand ... 728&type=3
If you want to check all the other pics, here´s the link to his FB site: https://www.facebook.com/harald.wiegand.12?fref=ts

His plane is a 80% replica made of wood, composite and alumin, with an automobile engine. It is a one of a kind scratch built, using custom made plans, not a kit. He told me, it is the only one existing. If you have further questions, feel free to contact Harald via his FB site, he is a very nice guy, open and friendly, and speaks English quite well. I hope that my info helps.

Cheers

Michael

I'd like to see a series of Hs 162s built in the same fashion the Me 262s were built.

Looks like Harald is building a full scale 109. Whats the story here?

It is a full scale replica of a 109 E, built prinarily in wood, some parts (cowling) in composite, engine mounts steel. This is a project originally started by a friend of Harald using modified Marcel Jurca plans. When the original builder died, Harald bought it from the son. Harald and his friend Achim are building it. The front part of the cowling was not a proper fit, done by the original builder, so Harald had to modify it. It will get an automotive engine too, around 450 hp IIRC. Weight is expected to be in the 1500 Kg range, + / - . Prop is under design by a company in Italy, GT. If you want to know any more, see my previous post regarding the V7 replica for contact details.

That's the one! Looking it makes me think it'd make a great Piper Enforcer replica.

Dr. Jim O'Hara of Texas has one awesome 75% scale P-38. It's all aluminum, too. Will see if I can locate a photo.
