A couple of things that might be of interest to this group, and some (if not all) might know is that a major portion of superstructure and other parts removed from the Arizona and were unusable, are stored on a remote point of Oahu on the Pearl Harbor Base. I have seen several pics. It looks like scrap just laying in the weeds and bushes, but you can tell what you are looking at if you know about the Arizona. Also there was a movie called "This Is The Navy" with Jimmy Cagney that came out in the late 30's. A lot of scenes were filmed on the Arizona.

I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from these photos. I was curious about the guns removed from Arizona. Particularly the 14 inch. I wonder if some of them found their way into some other ships in the next couple of years. That would be a fascinating story of transfer to others in the fleet to return vengeance. The story of Oldendorff's fleet off Suriago Strait - made up of so many ships raised off the bottom at Pearl Harbor is one of "payback". Odendorff himself was in a way taking the fight of his own past command - USS Houston (lost March 1 1942 - Sunda Strait - Java) to the enemy. usshouston dot org and my ship ussocallahan dot org (ref).

STORY FROM USS O'Callahan (built 1968 - DE-1051). I think it was 1969 (year not firm in my head) -- one of the YOUNGEST survivors of Pearl Harbor was serving in my ship. Andy Andrews of California was TEN years old and living a couple houses from the main gate at Pearl. His dad was on duty (and survived) in a destroyer in the harbor. Andy saw the whole attack and explosions. He saw the cleanup over time an collected scrap from planes shot down, etc. He saw stacks of bodies of sailors at Pearl from the recovery operations. He had very emotional feelings about Pearl Harbor. So -- when Andy was serving in my ship (a few years before me) the ship's first ex continental port of call was Pearl Harbor. By that time he had several years in the Navy and was a snipe. HE never wanted to come above decks to enter Pearl because he would cry and crying sailors are frowned upon. So the snipe job worked well for him. Often he stayed below the entire port period of any ship he would be on for Pearl visits. THIS TIME - after securing to the pier at some point -- he gets A CALL TO THE QUARTERDECK - to report to the OOD. As he arrives he is shown the sky as "JAPANESE ZEROES are attacking the ship - fake gun flashes going off). Andy is mortified. They are filming TORA TORA TORA! .. Andy recovered his composure but the shock and the timing were unusual. I am told you can spot DE1051 is a fractionj of a second of some shot in the movie but I have not successfully found it yet myself. I did record Andy's story. He is still living and is in California. I need to put that recording on our ship's website. He is a character and I do believe the stories. I was a young ensign though, so ... yes I was gullible then and still am.

Way off Topic but maybe of interest....

2 aft - 3 gun 14inch Turrets from the Arizona were reused as coastal defense batteries at Kahe Point and Ulupau Head. A detailed article on these in Warship International No3 1992, pages 273-300 was written by Ray Lewis and Dave Kirchner. These battery drawings were done by Ray Lewis.
