a german navy ww2 u boat has been found off the Carolinas along w/ a sunken merchant ship 240 yards away. the u - boat is utterly gorgeous covered in sea life, corals etc. sunk by vought kingfishers according to navy records. the sub is upright, & looks like the tulip fields of Holland!! it's on yahoo news.

On 15 July 1942 convoy KS-520, proceeding from Norfolk to Key West, Florida encountered U-576 off Cape Hatteras. U-576 sank one ship and damaged two others before she was sunk by shells from the deck gun of USS Unicoi and bombs from 2 Kingfisher aircraft (pilots: Ens. Frank C. Lewis, Charles D. Webb) of VS-9D4, NAS Cherry Point, NC, part of the Eastern Sea Frontier Inshore Patrol Squadron. Many reference sources claim Unicoi rammed U-576, but not according to witnesses on the Unicoi.

Been talking offline with some USCG historians about this. Trying to determine if any CG OS2U's were involved with this too. CGAS ECity had air responsibility for the Hatteras area and the VS-9 was out of Norfolk (Just north of ECity).

No doubt about it Nathan. There are still 2,000 U-boats (?) that have not been found yet.

I wonder just how many U-boats have been found around the world now?
I know there are more than a few American subs that are still out there somewheres.

2000 is a pretty big number for U-boats proper. Closer to 700 total were lost during the war. You should try this link for all things U-Boat:

And if you haven't seen the U-505 in Chicago, you should. It's fascinating.

Yea, I was thinking 2000 was a tad on the high side. Been to the U-505 many times. An amazing piece of history especially now that its inside.
