Nothing wrong with a 3rd P-51D in the lineup!

There are less than 20 spots remaining for the Friday Taxiway Photography and the Saturday Photo Tour/Photo Pit at this years Thunder Over Michigan.

First come, first served.

As the Merlin engine was considered to be so important to the war effort, negotiations were soon started to establish an alternative production line outside the United Kingdom. Rolls-Royce staff visited a number of North American automobile manufacturers in order to select one to build the Merlin in the U. S. or in Canada. Henry Ford rescinded an initial offer to build the engine in the States. In July 1940, the Packard Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan was subsequently selected to take on the $130,000,000.00 Merlin order. Agreement was reached in September 1940, and the first licensed-built Packard-built engine, a Merlin XX designated the V-1650-1, ran on a test stand in August, 1941.

Total Merlin production at the Detroit plant was 55,523. The de Havilland FB Mk. 26 Mosquito that will fly in the show in August, is powered by Merlin engines built in Detroit.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.

Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Training Squadron One (VMAQT-1), nicknamed "The Banshee's", are sending an EA-6B Prowler to Thunder this year for static display. This is the first Prowler in the shows history.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.

Nice to see a Prowler at Thunder! The Navy just retired their last one at NAS Whidbey Island, with the Marines at MCAS Cherry Point (including VMATQ-1) slated to fly them until 2019.

A shame that the EA-6B can't fly in the show, but hopefully we will see it fly in on Friday (Taxiway Photography/Arrival Day).

The Friday Taxiway Photography slots are all gone! Some Saturday & Sunday Photo Pit passes are still available. We always sell out of this popular area well in advance of the show, so, if you are thinking about it, don't delay. Details at yankeeairmuseum.org/airshow Click on Photo Tour.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.
