Nice plane. I like the style they chose for painting the N-number, it doesn't stand out as too anachronistic against the rest of the paint job.

Here is a fantastic set of air-to-air photos by Max Haynes (MaxAir2Air), in which part of the flight included flying over the late Roger 'Doc' Christgau's house: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 385&type=1

And another set by Max, from the unveiling in Austin, MN: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 385&type=3

Just curious, does the K-14 have a ETO range dial or the factory increments?

Another minutia: are the bandages in the first aid bag of 1940s vintage?

Curious, thx. geek VL

It won't have a K-14, but rather the N-9 reflector sight that it had when originally manufactured (as all D-models had from the factory until mid-late D-20 production - "Sierra Sue II" is from one of the earlier D-20 production blocks - as a result, it also doesn't have the K-14 twist-throttle, but rather the earlier standard ball-tip lever). More info in one of my earlier posts in this thread. ; )

Here is a great 2 hour video documentary with commentary that I have been anticipating, covering the restoration of the P-51D "Sierra Sue II", recorded and put together by David Quam (who has also done some other films around the Aircorps Aviation shop/projects).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in4XNrXuYto

(Some of the footage is from within the Redtail P-51C cockpit, when it was in for its annual back in 2013/2014, and doesn't reflect the Sierra Sue restoration.)

Since the time many of these photos/video were taken, the aircraft now appears complete in the most recent photos, showing it fitted with a P-38 rear-view mirror and N-9 gunsight, just as per original.

Now that Mustang is a work of art. Had the privilege of seeing her fly with Doc Christgau at the controls way back when. Hope to see her in all her restored glory someday too.

She's gorgeous!

Who did the nose art?
