Dark Olive Drab # 41 comparison with ANA 613

Below are several photos of paint samples we made up of Dark Olive Drab # 41 compared to a WW II Stinson L-5 fabric piece provided by Jim Gray. The fabric piece came from a Depot Aileron.

Also included is a comparison of the Dark Olive Drab # 41 compared to the lighter and more green ANA 613. The computer does not show the absolutely correct color shade and the pictures are for comparison only to compare the difference in shade. The camera makes the colors a lot lighter than they actually are. The last photo is the O-58A painted with the # 41.

The camera, lighting and other factors can cause paint to look very different for the same aircraft shot at different times and caution should always be used when using computer or photographic references for color guidance.

The effect of shade and shadow on Neutral Gray #43

Neutral Gray #43 remained in use well in to the Spring of 1944 until replaced with the much darker Sea Gray #603. It is actually very difficult to ascertain which color is on an aircraft from WW II photos as the # 43 can appear very dark in shade while the # 603 appears very light in bright sunlight.

Here are photos of the O-58A gear legs sprayed with Dark Olive Drab # 41 and Neutral Gray # 43, note the contrast in shade and very bright sunlight.

You are aware, of course, of how often this topic gets dragged up in modeling forums... and you have brought to us some real-life examples that illustrate extremely well the differences in these tones and shades. Thank you SO MUCH, sincerely, for this effort.

Insignia Blue and Insignia White.

These are the two colors most often mis-represented and most paint suppliers offer an insignia blue that is too light and Insignia White that is to pure white.

The WW II color cards below show how dark the actual blue is and the white is an ivory white not pure white. The contrast is very evident when the sample is held up next to a white sheet of paper.
