Warbird Information Exchange

On Sunday 20.07.2014 Gewerbepark Breisgau was celebrating their 20 th anniversary of converting military airfield Bremgarten to civilian use. MeierMotors had an Open Hangar Day, so I decided on Saturday to have a look at their facility. When I arrived there, it was raining.

Great stuff! But sad to see the former Harold Kindsvater 109 getting butchered. BUT I am glad / excited to see a dual control coming about. Just wish it was a new-build airframe.

Weather improved later on, so passenger flights with the TF-51 were possible. Pilot was Marc Mathis, who did fine aerobatics, all passenger stepped out grinning from ear to ear...


I did not take pics of a Stearman project, a Piper Malibu and a P-51 (in for maintenace), several cars and bikes (just mention a Jaguar E-type in primer). Though a large hangar, due to the number of projects space is not cramped, but I´d say confined. Some additional pics here:

I´d like to mention the very kind and friendly attitude of the Meier family, this will not be my last visit there for sure.
I hope you enjoy the pics as much as I enjoyed the visit.

Terrific report and photos Michael, thank you very much for sharing. This has got to be one of the most exciting resto shops in the warbird world for sure.

I only knew the shop through the internet, but was planning to go there some day anyway. When I read of the anniversary and Meiers open door facility, I decided on Saturday to drive there on Sunday. Yes, it is very impressive. The hangar is not small by any means, but due to that many projects it looks.... full. Though they do not work on all projects at the same time. To see it for real was a different experience, and I was impressed by the kindness and openness of the Meier family. It is a business for sure, but it is intertwined with passion and dedication as well. And -believe it or not-, the shop is as clean as any livingroom next door. If I had a warbird to restore, I would let them do it, lol. But that will never be.

Isn't Meier Motors rebuilding a Fiat G-59 for Jerry Yagen and is that the wing for it?

Yes to both questions. And the first 109 (the G-4) is his as well.

Are there still plans to convert the G.59 to a G.55? The Centauro is my favorite of the Italian fighters and I would love to see the G.59 converted. I understand it would probably be much more "user friendly" with the Merlin but what a fantastic sight and sound it would be with the DB. (I guess the G.59 is something of an Italian equivalent to the Buchon!)

Original Soviet engine in the Yak-3?

No. None of the repo flying Yak 3s have the Klimov engine.

No, lol, I only took a pic of that wing, it is a complete set of wings plus fuselage. Originally acquired in Spain. Whole story here:

They are rebuilding an ex-Spanish Civil War E-1.

And it's going to be a real looker when it is done.

Last info I read on that subject was, that it was not decided yet (at least at that time). But I think it will be some time till the question which engine it should be gets pressing.
