Setter,

there was a thread here, some months ago -with photos- of a former Peruvian AF P-47 that had been put up for sale in the Tucson, AZ area.

If I recall correctly, there were comments about severe corrosion on the main spars.

Saludos,

Tulio

Hi Tulio

Thanks for the information - I think I have tracked down the aircraft concerned but I remember the one you are speaking about as well. There were some pics of it in the Desert and apparently although it was complete looking it would be a real basket case to fix

Regards
John p

This is a great example of how false information published in a popular book gets picked up as fact.

45-49452 no longer exists.

44-32798 is the serial number of the airplane now at Hill AFB that came back from Peru. It was given by Venezuelan AF to the Peruvian Air Force as a display aircraft. It was painted as FAP 450, which was the paint scheme that was original on 45-49452 which was an FAP aircraft.

Thanks Tim for clearing up this conundrum!

Straight from Hill AFB, here's the latest on 44-32798:

P-47 Thunderbolt Restoration Update

"The restoration of the Republic P-47D (s/n 44-32798) purchased for the museum by the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah in late 2004 is coming along nicely. The restoration team estimates that it will be mid-2007 before the plane is ready for exhibit at the museum. If you would like to volunteer to work on this aircraft project contact the museum at (801) 777-6818 and ask how you can join the team!"

Hi Tulio-

I didn't mean to insinuate that you were passing it along as fact. What I meant is that it appeared in a popular book and the suddenly started showing up on everyone's survivor lists....

Hi, Tim!

No problem; if you recall, we have hashed this confusing serial here, some time ago; for me the usual problem is that I don't have all the data readily available, and as it has been proven time and again, operating from memory, is a losing proposition for me : )

Saludos,

Tulio
