P-51 Folks;

...while Randy works on the other 85% of the FAS Cavalier equation, we'll attempt to f/u on the whereabouts of the stock P-51Ds that where flown S. of the border some 45 yrs ago! FAS 406 through FAS 412!

What happened for instance, to P-51D N6165U poss 44- 63634 ( X FAN sample c.60s) that was confiscated somewhere near the US Border Jul '69? What about the P-51D that had to ditch during the ferry flight in the Gulf of Mexico?? who was that brave pilot? Did he survived? How did they go about that SAR mission in the middle of nowhere? I'm sure someone out there may have some answers & poss photos for us the P-51 buffs!

We'll begin with the stock P-51D FAS 406, a colorful forest green & brown spots sample, s/n ukn for now, since most of them made the ferry flight with fake ID regs. No we do not have a photo yet but we are working on it. Same with FAS 408!! Photo via AEC T. Adams.

Good day!

P-51D Lou IV (II) somewhere in the US c.'68. The S/N is not mentioned in the A/C article of June '73 (for obvious reasons), but according to Mr. J. Dienst, it's more likely AAF 44- 72483. This aircraft later became in '69 prob FAS 411! Photo via J. Kerr/B. Green/Wix

According to the heavies in the P-51 research Grp, i.e J. Kerr, D. Phillips & others the original Lou IV was a WW II AAF- 44-13410. Lou IV (II) was restored in memory of its pilot Col. Thomas J.J Christian who was shot down over S. France c. WW II.

Ahhh, ok that makes sense. The paint job on N13410 is the same as it was when Doc Almand had it as N6160U...which would in fact be " Lou II", but amongst Warbird memorial paint jobs would be "blue Lou #1".

In the late 1960's Wally Oakes had a P-51, during the same time as Bill Ross, at Dupage Airport 45-11586 N5423V now flying as Little Horse N51PE

On another post here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52646 Mark Allen posted a photograph of RCAF 9281 which is Ex USAF P-51D-25-NA serial number 44-73973. Delivered to FA Salvadorena, serial unknown, July 1969. Adopted id of P-51C-10-NT 44-10755 on return to USA, appears to be a composite of several ex FAS aircraft.
