Just wondering if any one knows any details or pics about the B-25 N9446Z that crashed at Chicago midway Airport on 8/7/76.

Crashed at Meigs Field, didn't it?

Here's an A-26 I didn't know about: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=9822&key=0

Had this for years and do not recall the photographer, I may have gotten it from Bob Haney or William Slate/

NTSB report with a lot of details (but no photos) here:

http://www.airdisaster.com/reports/ntsb/AAR77-03.pdf

Left engine failed and caught fire, cockpit full of smoke:

Quote:
Numerous witnesses observed an occupant of the aircraft (later identified as the instructor pilot) protruding from his waist up, out of the copilots right side window, The occupant was described as waving his arms back and forth.

I don't mean to go against the grain of an official report, but I don't think this is the same aircraft that crashed in Chicago. I have photos of "Yankee Raider" from the 1980's when Dean Martin owned and was flying it. In addition to that, this aircraft is still flying with the Lone Star Museum first as "Special Delivery" and now as "Doolittle Raiders Special Delivery".
Maybe it was a paper work swap, but the N-numbers for this airframe since 1959 have been: N9090Z,
N600DM, and now as N333RW.

The above photograph I trust is correct, Couldn't be N9090Z as 90Z in 1976 was not flying, she was under restoration here she was photographed, provided by Doug Hazel in West Point Virginia in 1973

Here she is still dismantled in Middleburg, VT, Feb. 1979. Photo Via Bob Haney

I remember reading the official report about it, 30 years ago. The detail was a wrist pin broke in the #1 cylinder of the left engine, breaking the cylinder head, causing a fire. Smoke poured through the leading edge into the cockpit obscuring the view of the pilots. The pilot opened the side window which caused a negative draft, causing even more smoke to fill the cockpit. The pilots were overcome by smoke causing the plane to crash.

Report also said that the engines had not been properly pickeled for storage, the mitchell sat for a few years ans the crankcases showed contamination inside

This one perhaps? G not Z in the #, from the Aero Vintage files :TB-25N 44-30737 (N9446G). This airplane later went to the late Jr. Burchinal and then on to a company named wAr Aero at Schiller Park, Illinois. It crashed on August 6, 1976, near the Chicago-Midway Airport with the loss of three lives.

But the pic shown with clearly shows Z??? Muddy Waters!!!!

Me thinks me made a mistake on that text in that posting. It obviously should have been a "Z" as per the photo.

For some reason, I seem to remember that the aircraft was for sale at the time and it was either being delivered or was going someplace to be demo'd for a sale... and if I recall, the sale was to have been to someone connected with the group that eventually started the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo? This sticks in my brain for some reason, but I can't recall why... anyone know if this is true or if it was just figment of my imagination?

Scott, in your photo there's some writing on 46Z's nose - it looks like JAY BAR OK or JAY DAN OK. Any info there?
