The South West Pacific ...

Mon Feb 10, 2014 11:36 am

... area during WW2 ... Per request but too much to cover in my lifetime. Some photos you probably have seen, some perhaps not.
I know a fair amount from this time and place in history but certainly not enough to be an expert. A little help would be mucho appreciated if something is not correct.

Fun thread, thanks Mark. If this thread doesn't get some kind of rise out of some old WIX posters like Jack Cook, nothing will anymore.

P-38F "White 33" (picture #5) is being restored at WesPac now.

P-38H 42-66905"Japanese Sandman II" is being restored at Precision Aerospace at Wangaratta, Australia, owned by Yagen.

Super photos Mark. More please. Have you got any RNZAF photos? There were loads of our squadrons in the South-West Pacific.

What was John Wayne doing in New Guinea? Seems a bit of a dangerous place for a guy like him. Was he on a USO tour?

Greetings Dave, yes I am intending to add some RAAF and RNZAF photos. This will be a very large thread.

Terrific photos, thanks so much for posting. I just picked up what appears to be a very interesting book that should go well with these photos: Fire in the Sky by Eric M. Bergerud, which covers the air war in the South Pacific. I've only read snatches of it, but so far the facts are straight and the story true. Check it out!

I googled and found this link which says John Wayne toured Brisbane, New Britain and New Guinea over three months performing two shows a day to entertain the troops, and visiting troops at the front lines. Maybe he wasn't such a big girls blouse as I'd heard.
