FG-1D's Post-War & NAS Glenview

Mon Mar 18, 2013 2:27 pm

Per request, I believe these all to be post-war NAS FG-1D's. I'm not sure what the differences are in FG-1D's to F4U-1D's other than who built them so I'll leave the distinguishing up to the experts. There is a request for FG-1D's from NAS Glenview. I have posted a few early NAS Glenview photos. I'm going to take a guess and say the bands and numbers are red on the early photos?

Nice color shot of the Grosse Ile Corsair invading Canadian airspace over Windsor with Detroit across the river in the background. Quite a few landmarks in that photo on both sides of the river are still easy to find.

Thanks Mark. I used to live near Glenview, but not until the mid-1970s. I do remember the military propliners and A-6s that used to fly out of there vividly.

NARU New Orleans moved from the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain just West of Lakefront Airport in 1954 out to the bogs of Callandar Field in New Orleans East (sounds so upscale, just don't step off the edge of the cement, you'll sink in the swamp). The NARU site became University of New Orleans' campus (or, as it's referred to by the locals, 'Dillard by the Sea')

NARU/NAS Sand Point, the starting and end point of the Armys Round the world flight in 1924 was closed years ago and is now Magnuson city park. Some of the hangers still exist as film sound stages and rented out for special projects needing a lot of room. I haven't been there in decades and don't know if there's even a plinth or placard stating that the RTW started and ended there but I doubt there is, as Seattle has a bad habit of shovelling dirt on anything historic. None of the runway outlines even exist anymore.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 6:18 pm

Any idea what happened to the Columbus NAS FG-1s?

Me being a local I would freak out if our CAF FG-1 was one of the Columbus NAS birds...even more than the hubub over the characterization of Lucifer in the current Bible TV series looking like a senior govt official...

Had to put that last quip in to get people to look at my question

THANK YOU FOR THE GLENVIEW PHOTOS! :drink3:

As a token of gratitude, here's another sampling from the booklet Dilberts Still Fly (or as I call it, 28 Ways to Ruin a Stearman and Possibly Yourself); these were all wartime accidents at Glenview:

Here's your CAF Corsair looking quite new ...

Paul Thayer, left, chairman and chief executive officer of the LTV Corporation, presents a completely restored Vought F4U Corsair to Confederate Air Force Deputy Commander Walt Estridge 3-17-1981.
The ceremony, held during the CAF's March 14 airshow in Harlingen, TX, climaxed a year-long restroation by volunteer workers at Vought Corporation, which is LTV's aerospace subsidiary. The LTV Chairman flew the aircraft in the show.
