Hello fellow WIX members,
This is Joseph Thompson, posting on behalf of my father Lowell.
My Dad, with heavens ticket in hand, took flight to the eternal realms of Glory, Saturday evening, March 2nd.
For those who did not know, Dad was diagnosed with a terminal cancer in May of '12. He had continued to post here, and in other places throughout his battle. These forums were a source of great Joy to him! I'll be anxious to hear from those of you who knew dad best, as I have not been a frequent follower here at WIX, but intend to be in the future.
Dad most enjoyed his devoted research to his father Lloyd's military aviation career, particularly in the 301st BG B-17's in WWII, and the 22nd BG with '29's in Korea.
He was also very knowledgeable in post-war Unlimited air racing, and specifically Mustangs and Cobras. He loved to tease others in trivia, and pop-quiz's in relation to aircraft identity, and history.
Once, standing beside Dad, another challenged him to quote from the top of his head, the s/n, Registrations, and history of any civilian owned P-51 in history, at which point another P-51 owner took the challenge, and proceeded to quiz Dad. To the astonishment of all around, Dad flawlessly answered from his memory, the complete civil history of the aircraft in question, which left this challengers in awe. I can attest to perhaps hundreds of similar times, when I personally asked him a question, and he could give satisfying answer without ever referring to a book, magazine, internet post, or other reference, for he simply had that information memorized! He was a genius of air-racing history as well, and leaves behind a library of references and materials, which is probably not equaled.
He took me to my first air races at Reno in 1990. I was 3 years old, and against my mothers better judgement, I was allowed to go. Sure enough he lost me! With the help of Unlimited race pilot Erin Rheinschild, I was located gawking at Lefty's P-38, and dad was able to return home with son in hand, to continue living in harmonious marriage!
Dad passed without the least bit of fear of his eternal destiny. He would want all here to know of his trust in Jesus Christ, and his confidence in that free gift of God, which is eternal life. Dad took his ticked to heaven in 1968, freely, by trusting in Jesus alone.
I would like to hold a live stream, in the coming weeks, sharing some stories, and photos, and discussing Dad life. This will be tailored to all of his friends in the aviation community, and I hope you all can join me. Will post details in due time.
Thank-you all for being such great friends to Dad over the years!
