Never heard of or saw an extended P-40 dogfight sequence in Tora, but the Viral Sea seems for Midway were in deeded part of the film prior to release but we're cut from the final release version. They were later reinserted into a special, two night version of Midway for TV.

I understand about a half-hour was cut from TTT after the premiere to bring the running time down..much of it consisted of scenes of various diplomats talking. Supposedly the cut footage no longer exists..too bad, I'd love to see the original long version.

As for "Midway"..the Coral Sea stuff, as well as a subplot with Charlton Heston and his wife along with some other scenes were shot after the movie finished its run in theaters, to pad out the running time so it could be shown as an extended two-night "event" on TV. None of those scenes were in the original theatrical version. They did the same thing with the movie "Earthquake," filming several new scenes and adding new characters for the extended TV version.

Only one piece of outtake footage from TTT has shown up, to my knowledge. In the 1979 NBC miniseries The Last Convertible, there is a brief aerial shot of burning aircraft; both PBYs and P-40s are visible, so that's probably why it didn't appear in the original movie.

Watch the original trailer for Tora and you'll see one or two shots that were never in the film.
