We met with several of the B-17 & B-24 Veterans this weekend and it’s going to be a great evening! The more these guys got talking the better the stories! When they started debating a comment made by German Ace Adolf Galland…it got lively!!Here’s a brief bio on just several of the WWII Veterans that are scheduled to appear at the Dinner. There’s more to come!

Bob "Punchy" Powell was a P-47 and P-51 Fighter Pilot with the 352nd Fighter Group. Punchy had a couple air to air kills and several damaged and destroyed while strafing German airfields. Punchy flew on D Day and has written two books on his Fighter Group. He is recognized as the top historian for his Fighter Group.

Albert MacMahan flew 25 missions as both a tail gunner and ball turrunt gunner in B17's during the darkest days of the 8th Air Force, before their was any friendly escorts beyond the English Channel. Albert flew in the famed 306th BG; later made famous by Bernie Lay in his book "12 O Clock High" as the 918th BG. Albert personally knew the 306th famous Commander COL Armstrong (who BG Savage was modeled after for the movie). Albert was actually a ground mechanic and was not trained as a gunner but after his unit suffered so many casualties, Albert volunteered to be the tail gunner on a B17 that had already had three tail gunners killed. Albert completed 25 mission safely, and never got more than a burn from his heated suit (when it shorted out), yet he watched many die around him.

Henry Hughey was a ball turret gunner in the 487th BG "Gentleman From Hell". Henry got into the war after Albert had already completed his 25 missions and came home. By the time Henry got there, the mission completion rate had been raised to 35. Henry's B-17 was shot down and he and his crew survived a crash landing being rescued by Soviets. He also participated in the famous Christmas Day mission (1944) in which he watch BG Castle's plane drop out of formation and go down earning Castle the MOH. Henry is the long time President of the GA Chapter of the 8th AF Historical Society and was one of the key individuals that got the Museum placed in and completed in Pooler GA.
