It appears that both engines had a system on the induction manifold where some of the exhaust was routed to an area just downstream of the carb in order to heat the fuel/air mixture piot to it entering the cylinder. Most engines now have this system deactivated due to corrosion issues.

Anyone know why it was used to begin with and why it is no longer necessary?
