The NASM June blog has an article
http://blog.nasm.si.edu/ on the the Horton 229, including some photos of the center section (I am not sure "fuselage" is the right word) in Building 10. Apparently it is being evaluated to see if the wings can be attached, which suggests to me that they may be getting ready to assemble and display it, if that is doable. The wings are already located in the restoration facility at Udvar-Hazy.

I saw this at Garber in about 1986 when they used to do the small group tours. It was covered in a heavy dust. It looked wicked without its wings !

Sweet! That is one incredible looking machine. Can you imagine being in a B-17 or P-51 and seeing that thing scooting across the skies? You'd be totally convinced you saw a UFO...

The NASM blog
http://blog.nasm.si.edu/ has provided some more information on the Horten 229 conservation. Nothing really important, but there is a 1950 photo of the aircraft fully assembled. There was some discussio earlier about whether the wigs a fuselage actually matched - they were found in different locations. Apparently they do.

Thanks for the link! Anything about the 229, I am fascinated by, haha. Just one of those "what if?" aircraft that is truly fascinating to research.

The wings do match, and I found some other interesting photos of it in a storage warehouse with other aircraft. I'm curious if the restoration will paint it with colors used by the AAF or a representative Luftwaffe scheme or standard factory delivery colors.

Considering how deteriorated the original wood structure is, I would think a conservation of what's left would be more appropriate that a full-on restoration, which would require the replacement of much (if not most) of the original material.
Now...when is Flak Bait going to be rescued from the grubby-hands of the tourists downtown?

READ the blog.
Evaluated as to fragile to transport, the 229 Center Section was moved into the Old shop where a dedicated conservation Team is removing the most fragile wooden "skins" and other materials deemed in need of a more stabilized means of transport. They and then the remaining structure will be moved to the new shop at the Udvar-Hazy Center where a comprehensive conservation will take place all in view of the public.
Actual reassembly of the aircraft is some time off.

Neat, thanks for posting.....now please release the CONVAIR Pogo and the the F-4 Sageburner. The Pogo as the first first fixed wing aircraft to conduct a vertical take off, transtion and vertical landing deserves a spot. No resoration needed, just drag it out.
