There were several reasons as to why the titanium was left unpainted. First and foremost, we have a photo of '951 in country with no paint on the tail. It may have burned off at somepoint, but in this photo it is clean. Second, the airplane was painted per USAF T.O. That particular T.O. leaves the tail bare. Lastly, I agree that the burned off paint produces a cool effect, but remember how often and how hard those jets were being flown. It may be a very very long while before our paint ever begins to show signs of that.

With all the bad news and cant do this from the government with warbirds this is really refreshing to know another F-100 is actively flying!

RickH or someone, can you give us some background on where the non-standard wing tip "rails" or whatever they are on the ends of the F-100F wings are? The question came up on AirShowBuzz and some photos posted there show the same type wing tips on F-100F's serving with the Danish Air Force years back.

I don't think any USAF F-100F's had these type wingtips, but I may be wrong.

It was a wingtip modification that the Danish Air Force put on there. I am not 100% sure why, but maybe RickH can enlighten us when he has a moment. This aircraft saw service with the Danish Air Force until 1982. We would love to find an original set to put back on.

I think you answered your own question but I'll let Rick answer. As for the CF Houston jet guys, we were down doing a 100hr on the TP-51 and had the pleasure of watching Rick and his guys prep, launch and recover the F-100, F4, A-4 and Huey. The preflight and post flight prep on the F-100 and F-4 requires a lot of work between the air crew and ground crew.

Great work and Great show.

The real story though is Bud Day, to watch an 80+ guy scamper up the rear boarding ladder like it was 40+ years ago was amazing. Really neat guy with an amazing story.

My friend Joe Engle climbs aboard. Joe has over 1,500 hrs in the F-100 as well as being a test pilot for the X-15 and several misions in the Space Shuttle

The special wingtip pods were designed and installed by the Royal Danish Air Force for the ALR-45 radar warning receiver antennas. Initially we tested the USAF antenna positions under the nose and on the tail fin fuel vent fairing but we decided to go for the wingtip installation instead as the direction finding was more accurate.
I was present when this particular bird, 56-3844, landed at Karup Air Base on August 12th, 1982, after its final flight in RDAF colours. I was also present when it left Karup air Base after it was sold to Flight Systems Inc for target towing duties. It is therefore really special to see the videos of her flying once again in a Misty 1 colour scheme and with George 'Bud' Day in the backseat.
