Yes, Bill Overstreet chased a ME-109 underneath the tower and shot him down.

Cool photos! I have seen similar photos of planes at the Eiffel Tower before but never these. Just think what those planes could say if they could talk. So much history of WW2 parked rite there beneath the tower.

Someone said that at one point the P-47 Thunderbolt that we had at Air heritage was displayed at the Tower. I believe they meant long after the war though. That could have just been a rumor. I'm sure others here know.

Is this the same group of a/c that was scrapped right afterwards, or am I thinking of another similar display somewhere else (or just totally off my rocker)?

I am surprised that nobody has done a P-51B/C up as "Berlin Express", complete with the painted-on whitewalls:

I believe you're correct. The B-17 and B-24 were disassembled, hauled in, and reassembled for the display. I've seen several aerial shots of the pieces before they were put back together, and there is no reason to believe they survived the scrapman after the display ran its course.

What is the original URL of the original post on the VLJ Forum (what is that VLJ forum BTW) ? Thanks.

There was at least one other aircraft there... that's not shown in those photos. "Janey" was an L-4 that had fought all the way from North Africa to Germany.

Look here for more information: http://www.warfoto.com/wild_blue_yonder.htm

I'm pretty sure at least one, probably more, liaison pilot flew under the tower during the war.

Is that the tail of a P-61 in the far right corner of that last pic?

Also, I love the paint scheme on that P-38.

There was an article with great photos recently in a mag with photos of an L-4 operating off the Avenue des Champs-Élysées near the Arc de Triomphe...
