Just kills me all these WW2 documentarys that cut and splice war footage together without any care for accuracy. Probalbly figure that the audience isn't gonna catch the couple second mistake.

One example is "Great Planes". On their P-40 episode they clearly showed some footage of a P-51A. On the P-51 episode, while visiting the Fighter Factory they focus on the "D" model's tear drop canopy while discussing the Malcolm Hood.

The kicker for me,is that I can recall watching this footage of a accident on an documentary (WINGS I think).

For years up until when I just watched it again I believed what the docu. said, that it was an accident between 2 early P-51s. But after veiwing it again. It looks like a flight of P-40s and not P-51s.

Not trying to be nit picky. I just think those that produce the shows should be diligent in the pursuit of accuracy and use correct footage.

Actually, the Aircraft in the WWII crash sequence are Curtiss A-25 Shrikes.

The crash happened in Spokane, Washington over by the old Fort George Wright, and what is now Riverside State Park.

I was watching some History Channel thing on the P-51 the other night, and at least twice they showed a clip of gun camera footage showing the wing being blown off what appears to be an F9F Panther.

It amazing the t there are millions of feet of un shown film form WW2 stored away and we are subjected to the same footage over and over againand again.

I love how they cut gun camera footage from the Pacific of a zero or Betty being splashed and inter cut it with shots of strafing German flak towers.

Yes, A-25s for sure. That collision occurred on 23 July 1944. I helped solve that one for CheckSix about five years ago. Four airmen were killed in that collision. The airplanes were part of an airshow being held there.

I thought I was the only one to think like that!
Aviation happened at the same time as film and film was used to record large parts of it. So, as you say why show the same bits?
These documentrys are not ment for people like us any way, we know the basic story and are looking for more (So we come to WIX).
I'm always looking at the stuff in the background any way.

Nearly every documentary that "shows" the attack on Pearl Harbor includes a clip of three SBD's in a shallow dive dropping bombs (purportedly Japanese dive bombers! At least what the viewer is lead to believe!!!) actually clipped from a film made by John Ford in 1943. Ironically, his 82 minute film was Banned by the US Government for 50 years because it pointed out the Governmental and Military Screw-Ups that led to the devastation of the attack. Looks like it is now available on DVD...Mmmmm, might have to look for that one!

Thanks for the clarification. For me personally I'm bothered when I see a service member's final moment captured for all posterity and it's used for mere entertainment purposes. My opinion is that if the footage is going to veiwed over and over again then out of courtesy to the fallen the truth should be told and the people watching should know their names.

There are some folks on Youtube that just eat these kind of vids up like there crack for no other reason than Crashing aircraft vids look cool. One vid I just saw was of 2 Beauforts that had a midair at low altitude over the water the Mega Striesand Douche of a kid made fun of those men dieing by syncing the clip to "Halleujah".

I would love to be able to take them and place'm in that cockpit for those final few seconds and feel first hand the unimaginable terror that must have been going through the crew's minds.


Where is this wealth of stored footage located?

Last of the current rant, anyone ever catch footage in a doumentary that the aircraft looks like models from some sort of old movie?

Would love to see a flawlessly accurate and executed docu. made and produced by grass roots folks like ourselves.
