I was just wondering if Butch Schroeder sold his P-47"Hairless Joe"?
I know it was up for sale last year, but I seem to forgot if it actually was sold and to whom.
Thanks
Jerry

The 57th FG was the first unit based out of Windsor Locks Army Airfield (later Bradley Field) and Stratford was an aux. field that usually had one of the Group's three Squadrons based there. Another Squadron was based at Groton. New England was a designated P-47 training region.
However, "Hairless Joe" is not from that group. "Zemke's Wolf Pack" the 56th FG, lays claim to "Hairless Joe". I believe the 56th trained in the NY area out of Mitchel Field.

The 57th fought in Italy and the 56th out of merry olde England.

Jerry

PS: I CORRECTED the Squadron Number!

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Still wish we could bring a Thunderbolt back to CT, but I guess we'll have to focus on a Corsair or S-39 for now.

Not 65th.

Based at halesworth and later boxted here in England

That was a late night slip!
Thanks for the correction.
I've corrected the earlier post.

They actually trained at Republic Field as well as Windsor Locks. They more or less " broke in " the Thunderbolt and went through the teething process with the aircraft. When they went overseas they were posted at " Horsham St Faith, Halesworth, and Boxted.

Go for the Corsair....the state that built it should have one flying within its confines.....but then you do have one nearby on Long Island, so that's just about as good. And it used to be based out here in Casper, WY, which is ALMOST Colorado, so THAT was almost as good too....we saw it a lot.

We do have one -4 being slowly restored in the state, and thats a great start.

But we still need an F4U-1, and maybe the FG-1D we have now restored to a full TF dual control example, complete with birdcage canopy.

Ok and maybe a -5, but then again maybe Collings Foundation will loan us theres.
