I'm researching USAAF pilots that shot down German jets and wanted to get a copy of the "Me 262 Combat Diary". At first I was only finding copies for $80-$125! So I went to AbeBooks and found a copy for $5.56 and would cost $3.00 for shipping. A few clicks later that baby was mine. I showed up yesterday and it is in great shape.

I opened it up and saw a dedication from the author John Foreman. The date is June 14, 1990. Who did Mr Foreman sign the book for? Donald S. Lopez!! Can you believe that? I now have a book in my collection that once belonged to a bona fide Flying Tiger Ace!! :drink3:

It's amazing the stuff that can turn up in used book stores and on amazon. great score!
I've bought numerous first-person books over the year and found the signed by the author when they arrived (the sellers really should look, as they could have charged more), two NASA-related book I ordered last month both showed up signed by the authors with no inscriptions.
A pal of mine recently ordered a used Apollo 11 book from Amazon and it arrived signed by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, from back before Armstrong had stopped signing in the mid 90s. Even before he passed on, Armstrong's signature was going for well into 4-figures.
I consider myself almost as lucky to have stumbled across a few books from WW2 cartoonist Bill Mauldin's personal collection. I have 2 signed books from authors to him, as well as Mauldin's personal copy of "Up Front" in the Czech language. And they cost me very little because the seller simply didn't understand what the deal was with them. You folks need to understand the context of that, in that I have a massive Mauldin collection and have written about the man and have done 'talking head' interviews about his life on PBS and the History Channel in years past...

That's really neat, Chappie! As an aside, the P-51C that is being built/restored at Aircorps Aviation for the Texas Flying Legends Museum will be painted in Don's 23rd FG markings as "Lope's Hope 3rd". http://www.projects.aircorpsaviation.co ... ary-photos

Thanks for the link John. I love B/C-model Mustangs.

A friend of mine picked up a WWII vintage "Air Forces" magazine from a table just ahead of me at an aviation flea market. The address of the Subscriber was Gen. Hap Arnold! He got it for $3.00!
