RAAF RE-FORMS 4 SQUADRON FOR FAC DEVELOPMENT WORK:
The RAAF has re-formed 4SQN to provide enhanced training for specialist ADF Forward Air Controllers (FACs) via the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) course.

Formed from the core of the previous Forward Air Control Development Unit (FACDU) and the RAAF Special Tactics Project, 4SQN will operate four PC-9/A(F) advanced trainers from RAAF Base Williamtown within 82WG and is commanded by WGCDR Dave Paddison.

“Air Force has deployed forward air controllers in operations dating back to Vietnam, but the re-establishment of 4SQN and the enhancement of the specialist capability represents the next evolution in integrated air and land operations,” Chief of Air Force AIRMSHL Mark Binskin said in a statement. “The re-formed 4SQN delivers highly skilled and deployable Air Force personnel who will have an essential role in the 21st Century battlespace.”

AIRMSHL Binskin added that there is an increasing need for specialist coordinators to work between air and ground units in close air support scenarios.
The original 4SQN flew CAC Wirraways and Boomerangs during WW2.
