Yet another dumb question from Gary......

Thu Jun 11, 2009 4:46 pm

I just brought the nose from the Voodoo home yesterday and after looking it over to see what it was going to take for me to restore it into something more presentable, I was puzzled by the colors it has.

Initially, I just assumed that the nose was once all black (which is what I thought they all were back in the day), with white stenciling. However, when I looked at the red areas of the nose, which I thought was just from the sun bleaching the original paint over the years, I noticed that the stenciling didn't look right.

On the area of the nose that retains it's original black paint, the stenciling is still white. However, on the red portion, the stenciling is black. Now, that just didn't make sense to me. I would've thought that if the sun bleached off anything, it would get the black paint first since it gets hotter than any other color. However, if you look at the second photo, you'll see how the "Do Not Paint" stencil is clearly done in black paint...not faded white. Right?

So, were there some F-101s flying around at some time with multi-colored radomes? Or have I just completely lost my mind? I wasn't even going to post this at first, as it may make me look as dumb as I feel, but I reckon that's the only way I can learn, huh?

Your thoughts?

Gary

maybe the white stenciling protected the black underneath it from fading at the same rate as the rest of the black paint. Eventually, the white did fade away, leaving the black fresh-ish underneath, but now also starting to fade.

Or it was two-tone....

So I'm guessing this gets inverted over a wire stand, filled with ice & beers?

I'm going to say that the stenciling was white on black, but the paint faded/wore off. As the white faded, it exposed the black. As the black faded, it exposed the red, and so on. The reason it looks like red stenciling is the paint around it faded at the same rate, yet didn't have the extra layers of paint to wear through. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the quick replies, y'all. Yeah, I'm sure that pretty much explains it. My mind hasn't been right over the last few months and I reckon stupidity is just a by-product of that.

And even though I like the idea of turning it upside down and making a cooler out of it, I think it'll look better attached to the airplane it came off of. ;-) Its now looking like I'll be moving the Voodoo to Austin Acres in about three weeks or so, depending on the schedule of the truck that'll haul it.

I've not been able to get the canopy open yet, so I've not been able to get any decent pictures. Of course, I reckon I could take a picture through the big hole in the canopy that some knucklehead put there. :x

The front cockpit has pretty much been cleaned out. The rear cockpit looks pretty complete, although I know at least one of the two radar screens has been busted by someone.

I know you've been looking for some Voodoo stuff, so PM or e-mail me with any thoughts on trades, or whatever. I'll be sure to take pictures of the airplane as we move it here, and may take some periodic shots as work continues on it, depending on just how much I decide to get into it. (I'd rather find a museum that wants it more than I do, and wants to do some tradin')

I think it was first mentioned on the thread about the "F-100 and F-101 in Snyder, TX." Turns out it wasn't an F-100, it was an F-105 and F-101. I'm too lazy to look up the link to that thread right now, but you can get a little more info on it there.

You guys in Texas always find the NEATEST toys! Up here, in the Northeast, you don't FIND stuff like that...

Can I come over to your house and play?

Heck, any of y'all can come over to play with these pieces of "yard art" that I have here. My house is a wreck and the dogs are retarded, but if you want to tinker with clunky old airplanes, then just come on out. It ain't much, but it's better than sitting in an office all day, dealing with people.
