of course we get the same thing at Reno every year. "those airplanes are too loud" hummm.....when you built your house on the hill you could SEE the airport...did you not think there would be occasional flying activity there?

The interesting part of this is that there isn't even a house next to the airfield, its all farmers fields.

I remember seeing those poles last year and I'm amazed something hasn't happened sooner. Thank god the pilot and aircraft got down safely. I think legal action is definitely in the cards here.

Just curious and speaking out loud here !!!!

Would you land on a runway that has "known" hazzards ?

It's not like you are not aware of the obstructions before flight ?

Not pointing fingers...just curious.

I checked and Sunset is 8:52pm in that part of the world, so at the 8:20 take off time he had a good half hour of daylight left to do a nice sunset flying display. I imagine in an aircraft such as the EMIL, you hands are so full just keeping it straight on take off, get it airborne, raise the gear, adjust power, add that setting sun in your eyes and it is easy to loose track of where the pole is.

But the fact is that if these poles are erected just in time for the airshow every year, then that is malicious intent. I sincerely hope Transport Canada goes after this land owner and prosecutes him. What if it was the prop and not the wing tip?! Sheesh....in the USA nowadays you can't even have a long lens at the end of a runway......nevermind poles!

He was taking off from the strip where the aircraft is based. Sure, there was good viz yesterday but I am uncertain if these poles are permanent or erected just at the time of the airshow. Going to check it out now...

The collision is being investigated by the Transport Safety Board and the NRP criminal investigation branch.

"Didn't think it through"? I'll say: keep in mind exactly how it was that Mr Russell garnered the funds to acquire his collection in the first place...! Very pleased to hear this was not more serious.

Note to self: Do not intentionally and overtly lock horns with a man who recently won a quarter billion dollar personal settlement against Disney.

Okay, I went to check it out on my lunch hour and I have a few small things to report.

1) No sign of 109 anywhere, so I gather it is locked away in its hangar

2) The only poles that I could find appear to be on the north end of the runway there was a 30-40' telephone pole standing there and a smaller pole (looks to be a silver flagpole)beside which was bent over steeply at a bout a 30 degree angle, my guess is this is the one that the 109 hit. The pole looked to be aluminum and much thinner than the other wood pole. Both poles are in line with the end of the runway and there is a farm house about 75 yards away from them.

The angle at which the smaller pole was bent suggests that the 109 was taking off North east, the prevailing winds here are out of the southwest therefore I can see how the pilot might not have seen them. At any rate, he hit the right pole as I'm certain teh other pole would have resulted in catastrophe.

While I was out there there was a police officer checking out the area around the poles. Purely by accident I met the owner of the farmlamd to the south of the airport and was he was more than hospitable to letting me watch some of the arrivals from his land. He went up and down the road warnimg people to steer clear of areas where he had applied pesticide but said that we were welcome to watch from his land.

So for every NIMBYer there are still plenty of good people out there.

And what if an aircraft was having mechanical problems and trying to make the field? what about the booby trap then? yeah, I hope an attorney has this guy for lunch.

With any luck, he will be forced to sell the property to pay the judgment or settlement, solving the problem permanently.

His neighbour on Sodom Road should be charged with attempted premeditated murder.

And hung by the neck until LESS STUPID!
