The airplane has a very checkered history, having crashed and been rebuilt several times.

44-74558 may indeed be the "core" identity of the airplane. 44-74558 is suspected to have been illegally sold/flown to El Salvador for the 1969 war. It is suspected to have been a parts donor used to construct an ad-hoc TF-51 after El Salvador's Cavalier TF-51 crashed and was largely destroyed (the dual-control cockpit survived the crash). So, 44-74558's nose, wing, empennage, and horizontal stabs were used to build up the new airplane.

Anyway, the airplane is noted as being 'wreckage' when acquired by Flaherty in '74 with all the other Salvadoran Mustangs. Its history since then is relatively well known. With all that crashing and rebuilding, and the core TF-51 fuselage probably being sourced from an anonymous Cavalier TF-51, I don't know that it's possible to pin-on any identity aside from "possibly" being 44-74558.

If anyone has further photos (especially during/after recovery from El Sal or when it was rebuilt) or information, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Nice scans there Bill. I keep finding out just how hard it is to make decent scans of older photos. I too would very much like to see more.

Just a photography note. I believe the proper form for the copyright notice is to use the date the photo was taken rather than the date it was scanned. Putting 2016 on the shots could be confusing to historians in the future.

I too miss those great air shows of the 1970s and 1980s. No matter what anybody says, those shows were just more fun than the oversecuritied scene these days. I'm glad I was around for some of them.

I've always loved that particular P-63. Steve Hinton flew his very first Air Race in that airplane.

Bill - glad you revived this thread because I just noticed that #75 in your list is my SNJ-6 N7983C with propane gas guns and 100lb practice bombs. Name was "Six Shooter". Sold it in the mid 1990s. It is still alive with a different N-number last I looked. All the best and thanks for your photos.

Randy

Randy your SNJ will be posted in a few days. I have a lot of photos to go through. Some are good, some are ok and some cannot be restored to a presentable photo. Almost all of the T-6s look like they can be made presentable.
