I suspect they're just pointing the business end of those .50 cals out to sea while they work on them.

Cool Pix.
Minor correction though.
The F4Fs in the 2nd and 3rd pictures are F4F-4s not F4F-3s.
Note the 6 gun installation, not the 4 guns set up used on the -3.
Also you can make out the upper wing fold hinge blister on the wings in both pictures and there are no leading edge pitot tubes visible on the left wing as they would be on the -3.
