ArmyJunk,

The F5F certainly isn't on the top of my hit parade list. Never has been. But the "story" that your series of photos presents is a very interesting one that got me to do a little Googling to learn a bit more about that bird. Father of the Tigercat. You have a Tigercat in your bag of tricks?

Thanks again for sharing.

Steve

Thanks so much for these recent photos, especially the sketches. They brought back memories of Engineering before CAD, when the best engineers were technicians and artists.

The variation in the nose and the nacelles shown in the photos is quite interesting. Seems off that the mockup shows 2 X .30 cal machine guns, 1 X .50 cal machine gun and a cannon. Seems like a lot of different ammunition to stock for one aircraft!

Thanks, but pic 2328 appears to be a TBM wing center section.

Mon Oct 06, 2008 10:29 am

Looks like an F6F center section to me. Still very cool! :D

Mon Oct 06, 2008 11:48 am

The original photo says it a "F7F-2 wing center section and gear" but titles can be wrong....

Wow, what I wouldn't give for one of those wooden bombs! 8)

Pic 2328 (center section)

Pic #2328 is definitely an F6F center section. Compare the wing-fold break to the same in #2248 on p.39. Hellcats are the only WW II-era Grummans whose wheels retract rearward and rotate 90 degrees to lay flat. The mains on the TBF / TBMs retract outward.

Pix 2333 & 2334

Mon Oct 06, 2008 8:24 pm

Picture # 2333 shows a beautiful Tigercat wind tunnel model. The caption incorrectly describes the "wires" extending from the starboard wingtip as electrical connections. Actually, these are bundles of small-diameter metal tubes which transmit the aerodynamic pressure sensed at the holes along the leading edge and elsewhere (see #2334), to a bank of manometers. That is how pressures were measured and visualized in the pre-computer era.
