GREAT WORK, AJ Brings back loads of memories! It's just too damned sad that good things come to an end.

The photo title says "Pl31plane90000galhydrostatic" I have no idea what that means but Hawkeye might...
I should mention that a right click and save gives you all the info I have on the photos....

I know these aren't as exciting as airplanes landing on a carrier deck but these were the folks that made it happen.....

This will be the last of the Grumman photographs I think, we still have 680 Republic, 260 Mitchell Field photographs and a large number of Long Island Aviation photos. I'm getting ready for a trip so I won't be posting anything next month.

Hi

I noticed your Panther/Cougar images. I am writing a book on the aircraft and would love access to these. I am scheduled to go to the Grumman plant latter this Spring, but would welcome the chance to use these. Are there high-resolution scnas available?

Yes, Malo83, Pic 2595 with the E2C fuselage, is a sort of dunk tank.

The technical name is a "hydrostatic test tank", a facility used to proof-test all pressurized aircraft. Unlike many aircraft of its era, the Hawkeye is pressurized for crew comfort. By the way, the fuselage in the tank is an E-2A, although at the time the photo was taken it was designated W2F-1.

Why was the designation changed? Long story. Let's just say it illustrates the Washington/bureaucratic mentality...the same thing which also led to screwing up our involvement in Vietnam.

Thanks again for the new set of images - fascinating. 2563 looks to have an NACA F-51 (or P-51 if you prefer) in the hangar - possibly a Langley based bird? I'm guessing that by the wing stripes...

Agreed, excellent pictures on so many different levels.

Is the P-51 in #2563 an H model? I'm guessing by the way the exhaust shroud is part of the cowling, not attached to the exhausts themselves.

Again, great pics, thanks for taking the time to upload them!

cheers

Hello all....

Does anyone know if ArmyJunk has given up on this thread?

Or has he shifted it elsewhere?

Thanks,

Hello to all the thread followers....

ArmyJunk2, the thread starter, has devoted almost two years (May 2007 - March 2009) to posting fabulous pics to this thread. He has asked me to relay that he now has to catch-up with a bunch of things that were left undone in the meantime.

The thread is NOT FINISHED, but he does need a break.
