AJ,

Looks like there is no # 3 wire under the tail hook. Could those guys scrambling on the side of the deck just be late for chow call?

Nope. These guys are spotting the deck and realize that this one didn't catch a wire. They probably hear the klaxon . The old straight deck carriers like this one had 11 (? ) wires from which to catch or a barrier. This photo was taken just seconds before a nasty mess.

Photo number 2302

According to Baugher's site:

123427 (VMF-115) hard landing on FDR 11/28/1950 and bounced over barrier, hitting parked F9F-2s 123429 and 123398, and three other planes.

Not a good day for all.

Regards
Steve

Worse? Not sure, depends on just whats DOWN there. Now if THIS is what's down there......might be considered "Worse" if your driving....I can't tell if this is the forward hangar or not.

But i wouldn't want to be either of them. A definate "Oh S***" moment.

Glad you posted that one.

The pilot of the airplane that went into the elevator well and two sailors with the airplane on the elevator were seriously injured. The pilot of the Panther on the elevator was not injured.

Hello from Germany, I have to thank you very much for the last two posts - they just made my day. Every since I read Buck Danny comics as a little boy I fall for Panthers... and it's getting worse! I got all books available (far to few!!!), but your photos are really the cream on top of the pie... especially all the factory pictures. Well, thank you very much again!

B.

Oof! Sure wish I could make out the Bureau Number on the Sikorsky HRS in photo 2313.
