former game show host bob barker was a ww 2 fighter pilot??

read a small article in today's newspaper about long time former tv game show host bob barker from "the price is right" game show. the article was about some big charitable donations he made recently. in passing in the article it was mentioned that he was a ww 2 fighter pilot!! any info out their as to branch of service / theater of operation / aircraft flown / combat history?? for those who know......... COME ON DOWN!! you could win the car, luggage, & trip for 2 to the fiji islands!!! :lol:

I think he was a USN Corsair pilot, but I don't believe he made it overseas before it was all over.

I heard one day, watching the Price is Right with my first wife about 35 years ago, Bob mention that he was a Corsair pilot. By that I assumed he was Navy or Marine.

I also watched the show where he said he flew corsairs. One of the contestants was in military uniform and mentioned he flew corsairs (jet version).

Both the old comedian George Goubles(remember,cant spell) and Ed McMahon were marine corps fighter pilots,but ED might have been in Korea

George Gobels was a B-26 pilot. Didn't get overseas.

I saw the Tonight show where George Goeble talked to Johnny and Ed about his service.... He said he was responsible for no Japanese attacks on Omaha...They both burst out laughing at his dead pan delivery.

McMahon trained in Corsairs during WWII but didn't see combat.
He stayed in the rerserves and flew L-19s (the Marine OE-1 to be exact) in Korea.

And speaking of game show hosts in the military, the original host of Jeapardy!, Art Flrming, said he was a PBY pilot. He said something about accidently dropping a depth charge on a whale...

Better not mention THAT to Bob Barker either!.

Wow! I was checking out the old Johnny Carson show last night on Youtube and that episode is there. It was with Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Judy Cairn and George Gobel. There are 4 or 5 parts on there for that episode. It was hilarious!!!

George Gobel was wearing a sweater with a patch that was for a fighter squadron association I assume he was a member of and Johnny noticed it and that's how the subject came up. George said he was an instructor in the B-26 and another plane....an A-something or other. I didn't catch the designation. He was an instructor at Altus and another Oklahoma training base. When he cracked that line about how he must have done good because the Japanese never bombed past Oklahoma....I about died laughing.

Go to Youtube and type in Johnny Carson and George Gobel. I think it is the 3rd or 4th clip where George came out on stage. He was right after Dean Martin. Carol Wayne (the real cute gal whose schtick was playing the dingy blonde part) was also on there.

Too bad they don't make shows like that anymore. I even watched the Jackie Gleason too. There's a few Crazy Guggenheim clips there. Oh the good ol' days.

The funniest part of that tonight show episode was when Dean Martin was putting his cigarette ashes in Georges coffee cup.a true classic.and Bob Hope too

yeah, ed mcmahon was a corsair pilot. Something else i never knew was that Clint Eastwood crashed,( in a a-20 or a a-26 maybe,) in the ocean while on leave and had to swim 3 miles to shore with the pilot. I could be wrong on the plane.....but it was a douglas
