Dr. Jonathan P. Shermer USMC WWII pilot

This is an usual obituary as it as it contains Dr. Jonathan P. Shermer and Mrs. J.P. (Edyce) Shermer a couple who passed away with two days of each other.

Mrs. J.P. (Edyce) Shermer passed away March 15, 2016. Edyce was born in Little Rock on Jan. 1, 1924, to Myrtle Booker Taylor and Edgar Taylor. She attended Henderson College and worked as a stenographer in the U.S. Engineers’ office during WWII. She married Dr. Jonathan P. Shermer on Sept. 21, 1944. He passed away March 17, 2016. He was born in Horatio on May 23, 1923, to Hazel and Dayton Shermer. He was a U.S. Marine captain in World War II, a pilot who flew a Corsair in the South Pacific. He attended Hendrix College, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Emory University in Atlanta. He later joined the Army and spent two years at Fort Chaffee as a medical officer before starting his medical practice in Fort Smith. His achievements throughout his life were numerous: soap box derby winner, Eagle Scout, Golden Gloves boxer, aviator in World War II, physician for more than five decades, cattleman, longest serving member on the Fort Smith planning commission, successful businessman and much, much more. Mrs. Shermer supported him every step of the way.

Dr. and Mrs. Shermer were loving parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who will be deeply missed by their family. They were known as “Bigdad” and “Gran-mom” to their loved ones. Their 71 year marriage was a true love story. He died of a broken heart two days after her passing.

Dr. & Mrs. Shermer were preceded in death by her twin sister, Anne Blakely; and his brother, Dayton Edward Shermer.

They are survived by their son, Jon P. Shermer Jr. of Clarksville; daughter, Susan Horton and husband Tommy of Birmingham, Ala.; three granddaughters, Dr. Susanna E. Shermer and partner Mechan Vanderpool of Little Rock, Ashley Ivatt of Greenville, S.C., and Angela Horton of Birmingham, Ala.; two great-granddaughters, London Ivatt and Jada Jackson; great-grandson, Hudson Vanderpool; two nieces; two nephews; and their families.

They were members of First United Methodist Church.

Private graveside services will be at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
