Information on WWII VC-75 on the USS Ommaney Bay

Wed May 06, 2015 4:19 pm

Looking for any information on the Naval "Composite Squadron 75" (VC-75) serving on board the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE 79) which was sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in WWII. Any information of any kind and/or pictures would be appreciated.

My father Lt. Donald R. Packard apparently flew an Avenger in the Battle of Leyte Gulf (i.e. second battle of the Philippine sea). His jeep carrier the Ommaney Bay was sunk while he was attacking the Japanese fleet. He received two Air Combat medals for his actions. I believe he flew a Grumman TBF Avenger, but I could be wrong. I do not see the Avenger listed anywhere as a carrier plane.

Thanks for any information.

Glenn
