I know this isn't the proper place to potentially post this but I know somebody can help me. I'm looking for the decommissioning programs for any of the Iowa class battleships from 1991-92. Please pm me if you have one. Thanks!

I wonder how the USS Iowa is doing in its new home in California as far as it being a viable attraction?

For the moment she seems to be doing well. When I was aboard in mid March there were quite a few other visitors as well. SoCal is probably a good location.

I was just there last week. It seems to be in a pretty good location on the waterfront in San Pedro, although I'm not too familiar with that area. I do know that I had to drive by the Iowa on the way to the Cabrillo Aquarium / Park and Point Fermin Lighthouse, so if that is the main thoroughfare, there is plenty of visibility. As far as an attraction, I think it will be a draw once they open up the rest of the areas that are not yet open, i.e. engine rooms, turrets 1 or 3, etc. I have to say I enjoyed my visit and will go back when there is more to explore.

I drove right up to the gangplank of the Iowa when she was still tied up at the Philly Navy yard in 1998. One of the workers told me that there was a lot of work to do before a display could happen. The only Iowa battlewagon I haven't seen in person is the Wisconsin. I've seen the New Jersey when she was still tied up at Bremerton and then from across the river at Philly in 2009 (there was a country music concert at a staduim near the pier that the ship was tied up at, and after 2 hours of trying to get through insane crowds, we never got within 5 blocks of the place, I'm still seething over that). My wife and I have walked the Mighty Mo's deck at Ford Island, too. She is the very best preserved Naval vessel I've ever seen on display anywhere.

We toured the USS Missouri a few years ago. I was just in awe of the shear size of this battlewagon. The folks that own her must have deep pockets. The recent drydocking to repair leaks and to give the hull a fresh coat of paint could not have been cheap.

Next time I visit the Mighty Mo I am planning on spending the extra cash to get the WHOLE tour - it is a really fascinating ship to be sure! Also, when I was there they were in the midst of replacing the teak deck - that could not be a cheal endeavor.

If I could have the chance to visit this battleships I should roam around to see how great is this battleships. I would love to see the armors and the artilleries in there, the weapons and the ammunitions.

The Wisconsin is in absolutely fabulous condition inside and out- it's literally a time capsule from 1991 inside, down to the Coke machines and dispensers. Norfolk has opened up quite a bit of the interior spaces and it's really cool to be able to go through several decks worth of berthing, mess, and operational areas, and it's being very well kept up as well. The only thing I saw which needed obvious work when we toured her back in August was the wood decking, which is in dire need of recaulking and some plank replacement; it's still functional though, and I think the funding they have is being prioritized to improve the rest of the spaces as well as access. A few of us from our local living history group have reached out to them about possibly setting up an occasional display on board, and we've gotten some tentative interest... we're hopeful this will pan out into a really cool opportunity.
If you are anywhere near Norfolk, I can't recommend a visit to the ship highly enough!
