i think that it's not to hard to determine the tailer gunners fate. amazing pic!! the tail section looks as if it got hit with a flying chain saw!! note how the tail damage is devoid of jagged metal.

That's "All-American", right? Of the famous in-flight pic of her nearly cut in half by a fighter ramming?

With all due respect; unless Jack's got the S/N wrong, I believe it is.

It's not the All American but the serial number was on the back
of the archives photo. So the scribe slipped a digit somewhere.
This a/cs serial is probably 1-2 numbers away. Just has interesting though.

My bad; upon further review and navel-gazing, I was wrong, wrong, wrong. First time ever! :D

Here's the most published shot of All American. I don't think any crewmen were badly injured during her ordeal.

I met and spoke to the pilot of the All American during the B-17 50th Anniversary celebration at Museum of Flight in Seattle back in 1987.
None of the crew members were seriously injured and the tail gunner didn't know how bad the damage was until they landed.

Hard to believe that first bird landed in one piece.

Speaking of bringing the crew back, check out these pics I found at the site of the Bloody 100th.

The airplane broke it's back after weight was put on the tail wheel as it slowed on roll out.

My understanding was that the fuselage finally collasped after the tail gunner open his little door to get out  :!:

I've heard it both ways.
I suspect it broke on roll out/taxi and collapsed when the tail gunner opened his door.
