Someone was keeping both eyes on this individual!!!!.......and whats the story on the mechanic and the (I assume) the Inspector who bought this off?
Any time you're feeling bulletproof in your mechanic or QC job, grab a handfull of washers, hold them at arms length and spread your fingers and imagine those washers are people and your hand is the airplane you are working on....................................
In all my years, I've never met anyone who could walk from Honolulu to San Francisco

Hi Inspector,
Quite possible on this experimental that the pilot/owner did his own maintenance. We'll need more details before assuming a mechanic and inspector are at fault. The pilot did a great job with a happy outcome!

Sabremech,
Quite possibly, however I stand behind the second part about the hand full of washers, not a bad practice about every 90 days to keep you focused and humble-

i am a heavy equipment mechanic and work on a lot of heavy dump trucks and am constantly amazed at the cavalier attitude towards the braking systems and steering systems of these very heavy and very fast trucks i constantly rail against my employers about problems with the trucks because they don,t want the down time.

We call them "Killer Gravel Trucks" where I live.

Inspector,
There's not a point in my day working with these airplanes that I'm not thinking of who is flying in them and my responsibilities. Staying focused on what you are doing and eliminating distractions is far more important than any analogy of change falling through my fingers. Unless I'm missing something, I'm not hearing of airplanes raining down from the skies.
Your point is taken, but frankly we have quite enough safety information circulating to make us dizzy. Have you heard of the latest buzzword (SMS)? In case you haven't (Safety Management System) and it's coming to all of us in the aviation profession, like it or not!

sabremech,
That's because we're Old Skool-I see plenty of youngsters who all think they should be 'zekutivs' and don't care about anything except their next text message, and don't understand that you cannot text an airplane together and don't care 'it's just a McJob dude'.
And people ask me why I don't fly anymore----
